Add page numbers to a PDF
Add page numbers at the top or bottom, left, middle or right, as plain numbers or "Page 1 of 12", starting wherever you like and skipping the cover if you want. Running it again replaces the numbers rather than adding more.

How to do it
- Open your PDF.
- Open Tools and choose Page numbers.
- Pick where and how, then Add numbers.
You do not have to take our word for it
-
Watch the network
The "Nothing is uploaded" button in the app opens a list of every other site the page has contacted since you opened it, and how often, taken from the browser's own record. Your browser's developer tools show every request, this site's own included.
-
Pull the plug
Once the app has loaded, turn off your network and keep working. Text recognition, the document converter and the handwriting fonts work offline too after their first use.
-
Redaction that removes
A page with something blacked out is saved as a picture of itself, so the text under the box is gone, and every redacted page is checked before the file is saved.
Questions
- What styles are there?
- 1, 2, 3; Page 1; 1 / 12; and Page 1 of 12, in six positions and three sizes.
- Can I skip the cover?
- Yes. No number on the first page leaves it bare but still counts it, and you can start from any number.
- Can I search for the numbers in the downloaded file?
- No. They are drawn into the page as part of its picture, not added as text. If you reorder pages, add the numbers again.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Page numbers is one of the everyday tools, free forever, with no account and no watermark.
