Make a PDF grey, or black and white
Grey takes the colour out of every page and keeps the rest as it is: text stays sharp and searchable, and links and form fields keep working. Black and white makes each page a crisp picture, best for photographed documents, with its words kept searchable underneath.

How to do it
- Open your PDF, open More ways to export (the arrow next to Download) and choose Grey or black and white…
- Choose Grey or Black and white, and press Download.
You do not have to take our word for it
-
Watch the network
The "Nothing is uploaded" button in the app opens a list of every other site the page has contacted since you opened it, and how often, taken from the browser's own record. Your browser's developer tools show every request, this site's own included.
-
Pull the plug
Once the app has loaded, turn off your network and keep working. Text recognition, the document converter and the handwriting fonts work offline too after their first use.
-
Redaction that removes
A page with something blacked out is saved as a picture of itself, so the text under the box is gone, and every redacted page is checked before the file is saved.
Questions
- Which should I choose?
- Grey for a document made on a computer: nothing is lost. Black and white for a scan or a photo of paper: shadows and grey paper turn white and the writing black.
- Do links still work?
- In grey, yes. In black and white each page becomes a picture, so its links stop working, though its words can still be searched and copied.
