Convert the tables in a PDF to Excel

Read the tables back out of a PDF and save them as an Excel workbook or an OpenDocument spreadsheet, each table on a sheet of its own, with numbers, percentages and dates as values you can sort and calculate with. The rest of the text comes along on a sheet of its own.

Saving as Excel or OpenDocument is free for PDFs of up to 5 pages. Longer PDFs are part of Pro. Pricing

How to do it

  1. Open your PDF. For a scan, run Tools, Recognise text in scans first.
  2. Open More ways to export (the arrow next to Download) and choose Convert to Word, text and more.
  3. Pick Excel workbook, or OpenDocument spreadsheet for LibreOffice.

You do not have to take our word for it

Questions

Will every table be found?
Not always. Tables are recognised from how the PDF's text is laid out, which does not always show where a table is, so check the sheets before you rely on them.
What are the sheets called?
Each table's sheet is named after the heading before it in the PDF, and the text that is not in a table goes on a sheet of its own.
Are numbers kept as numbers?
Yes. Numbers, percentages and dates become values, so sorting and formulas work on them; everything else stays text.
What about a scanned PDF?
Its pages are pictures, so recognise their text first with Recognise text in scans, then convert.
Is it free?
Saving as Excel or OpenDocument is free for PDFs of up to 5 pages. Longer PDFs are part of Pro.
